ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a system of asana practice in which a particular sequence of asanas, same every time, is performed with flowing movements in between( vinyasa), which conjoin each asana with the following one.

Its roots are found in the book Yoga Korunta, attributed to the Rishi Vamana. The meaning of the word Korunta is “group” and it is said that it includes this particular group of asanas that it is used in Ashtanga Yoga. All components of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga are contained inside Yoga Korunta, namely vinyasa, bandha, drishti and asanas.

Vinyasa: is a system of movement and breathing in which each movement corresponds to one breath.

Bandhas: literally means seals which are muscular locks in the anal and lower abdomen area, maintained throughout the practice. Bandhas, seal energy and make the body light, strong and healthy.

Drishti: is a point where one looks while doing the asana. The nine dristhis are: the nose, in between the eyebrows, navel, thumb, hands, feet, up, right side and left side. Keeping drishti, stabilizes the mind and enhances concentration.

Asanas(postures): purify and strenghthen the body and are organized in 6 series, primary , intermediate and advanced A,B,C and D.

In the class we will gradually practice the first series and explore its components.
